In our previous blogs, we explored the challenges and solutions in fish processing water treatment, focusing on regulatory demands, wastewater variability, and the importance of sustainable, efficient solutions. To conclude this series, we are proud to present a real-world example that demonstrates our Nijhuis Saur Industries expertise through a successful collaboration with Australis Seafoods.
Australis Seafoods is a renowned Chilean company specializing in the farming, processing, and international distribution of high-quality salmon products. Committed to environmental responsibility and sustainable aquaculture practices, Australis continuously seeks innovative ways to reduce its environmental footprint while delivering premium seafood to global markets.
The challenge
Faced with increasingly strict local and international discharge regulations, including the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) standards, Australis needed a reliable and experienced partner in water treatment. The challenge was significant: highly variable wastewater characteristics combined with dynamic water flows required a modular, flexible, and future-proof treatment solution tailored specifically to fish processing operations.

The solution
Working closely with Nijhuis Saur Industries, Australis implemented a comprehensive, multi-stage water treatment system designed to efficiently manage their wastewater while improving operational sustainability. The process begins with the removal of large solids using a filter, followed by flow stabilization in a balance tank. Fine particles and oils are separated through a combined flocculation and flotation stage, preparing the wastewater for biological treatment.
A biological treatment solution with an activated sludge DAF acts as an optional step when additional pollution must be removed to meet the discharge limits. The sludge generated in both the pre-treatment and biological treatment phases is dewatered using a screw press, significantly reducing the volume of waste and minimizing disposal costs.
To ensure continuous performance and operational control, the entire system is monitored through the NSI Digital Platform, providing real-time data and insights for efficient plant management.
